MIROS CamScore Explained — What the Dashcam Safety Ratings Really Mean
If you've shopped for a dash cam in Malaysia recently, you've probably seen "5-star CamScore" in product descriptions. Here's what those stars actually represent, who awards them, and how to use CamScore to make a better buying decision.
What CamScore Is
CamScore (officially the Dashcam Safety Score Card Programme) is a joint initiative between:
- MIROS — the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, the same agency behind ASEAN NCAP crash-test ratings for cars
- CyberSecurity Malaysia — an agency under the Ministry of Communications
Launched in late 2022, CamScore evaluates dash cams sold in Malaysia and awards each one a star rating from 1 to 5 (maximum 5.00). Think of it as ASEAN NCAP for dash cams.
How CamScore Works
Each dash cam is scored on three categories:
- Basic features — resolution, frame rate, loop recording, G-sensor, emergency recording, audio recording, etc.
- Advanced features — HDR, WiFi, GPS, parking mode, app control, supercapacitor power, etc.
- ADAS features — forward collision warning, lane departure warning, front-vehicle-departure alert, etc.
Scores are aggregated across the three categories. A dash cam with many basic features but no ADAS ends up in the 3–4 star range; a dash cam with strong features in all three categories can reach 5 stars.
Importantly, CamScore doesn't publicly publish the weighting formula — so the scores are directional rather than audit-grade. But because every dash cam is evaluated against the same criteria, cross-model comparisons are fair.
What CamScore Doesn't Measure
It's useful to know what CamScore doesn't cover:
- Actual image quality in Malaysian conditions. CamScore evaluates feature checklists, not real-world video quality. A dash cam with every feature and a mediocre sensor can still score 5 stars.
- Build quality or durability. Heat resistance, supercapacitor longevity, firmware update support — not assessed.
- Local service and warranty. A brand with no Malaysian service network can score 5 stars.
This is why CamScore is a good starting point for short-listing, but not the final word. Combine a high CamScore with local warranty, a known sensor (Sony STARVIS 2), and real user reviews for a complete picture.
Top-Rated Dash Cams Under CamScore
As of the most recent public CamScore results, 70mai has earned more top-5 placements than any other brand — a recognition MIROS formally awarded in May 2024 as "Brand With Most Dash Cams in Top 5 Dashcam Safety Scorecard."
Notable scores:
- 70mai A810 — 4.69/5 (highest single score ever recorded in the programme)
- 70mai A800S — 4.59/5
- 70mai A500S — 4.59/5
- 70mai M500 — 4.53/5
- Thinkware U1000 — 4.56/5
- DDPAI X5 Pro — 4.52/5
Five dash cams have earned 5-star ratings; four of them are 70mai.
How to Use CamScore When Shopping
- Use CamScore to short-list. Any dash cam scoring 4.5 or above passes a reasonable feature bar.
- Don't use CamScore alone. A 4.59-rated dash cam from a brand without local service is riskier than a 4.3-rated dash cam with strong warranty and installation support.
- Check the list date. CamScore results from 2022 may not reflect newer models launched in 2024–2026. Cross-reference with the latest MIROS publications.
Is CamScore Mandatory?
No. CamScore is voluntary — MIROS positions it as a consumer awareness programme, not a regulatory certification. A dash cam sold in Malaysia doesn't need a CamScore to be legal. But brands that submit for scoring signal that they're confident in their product.
Where to Find the Official List
The current CamScore list is published on MIROS's official channels. The list is updated periodically as new models are evaluated.
The Bottom Line
CamScore is the only locally verified dash cam rating in Malaysia. It's a useful starting point, especially for short-listing unfamiliar brands. But treat it as one data point among several — pair it with sensor quality, local warranty, and real-world reviews for the complete picture.
70mai's 4K line (A810, A810S, T800) all trace lineage to CamScore-top-rated products, which is part of why we stand behind them.
